Carbon footprint of drinking water softening as determined by life cycle assessment

چکیده

In the Netherlands, central softening of drinking water is widely applied for reasons public health, client comfort, economic and environmental benefits. Currently, detrimental contributions softening, in particular use chemicals energy, are taken into account carbon footprint Dutch companies. The beneficial have, however, until now not been included footprint. Here, we present an attributional life cycle assessment (LCA) water, including effects at household level several sensitivity analyses. Five methods were (pellet reactor (PR), storage reservoir (WSR), reverse osmosis (RO), nanofiltration (NF) ion exchange (IEX)). Domestic by IEX represented as well. Central except RO, shown to reduce when included. main caused consumption energy process. softened with respect level. Decreases hardness result reduced scaling give rise a prolonged lifespan appliances which heated, those less required cleaning agents. For PR WSR new effect was identified; capture crystallized calcite dissolution CO2 water. We show that companies Evides Waternet approximately 20% 60%, respectively, their total compensated net benefit softening. Netherlands estimated be −0.11 Mtonne eq./yr.

Complementarities of water-focused life cycle assessment and water footprint assessment.

T recent past has shown two parallel developments: the water resources community discovered the relevance of supply chain thinking for water resources management and freshwater allocation, while the life cycle assessment (LCA) community recognized the importance of water use and included those related impacts in LCA studies. The water footprint concept was introduced by Arjen Hoekstra as an ind...

Sensitivity analysis of parameters affecting carbon footprint of fossil fuel power plants based on life cycle assessment scenarios

In this study a pseudo comprehensive carbon footprint model for fossil fuel power plants is presented. Parameters which their effects are considered in this study include: plant type, fuel type, fuel transmission type, internal consumption of the plant, degradation, site ambient condition, transmission and distribution losses. Investigating internal consumption, degradation and site ambient con...

Reply to Pfister and Hellweg: Water footprint accounting, impact assessment, and life-cycle assessment.

In response to our article on the blue and green water footprint (WF) of bioenergy (1), others propose to multiply each blue WF component by a water-stress index and neglect green WFs, because impacts would be nil (2). They propose to redefine the WF from a volumetric measure to an index resulting from multiplying volumes by impact factors. Framing their argument within the logic of life-cycle ...

Impact of Power Generation Mix on Life Cycle Assessment and Carbon Footprint Greenhouse Gas Results

The mix of electricity consumed in any stage in the life cycle of a product, process, or industrial sector has a significant effect on the associated inventory of emissions and environmental impacts because of large differences in the power generation method used. Fossil-fuel-fired or nuclear-centralized steam generators; large-scale and small-scale hydroelectric power; and renewable options, s...
